Works are officially underway on an expansion of Castlemaine's Middleton Prison.

Bendigo West MP Maree Edwards turned the first sod on the $38 million  project yesterday.

The upgrade will deliver 39 new beds, with its capacity increasing to 287 prisoners.

Works should be finished by the middle of next year.
